cashier to take my atm card

Is it illegal for supermarket cashier to take my atm card and swipe it themselves? The cashier always wants to take my card and swipe it through the system that its in front of me when I can do it myself. She tries to take the card out of my hand and all. The last time I walked out of the grocery store without paying because I refused to give her my card and she made a spectacle of it. Once I heard that was illegal. Is it?
